3rd grade student planner: Third grade students will now start writing down their homework assignments in their planners. Please make sure to review your child’s assignments and sign in the parent signature box daily.  

 

Third Grade:

 

Math:  We will continue in our Envision Math books this week. The topic we will be focusing on is, “Understand Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers.” This week the students will focus on division strategies.  We will also be using Mad Minutes for Addition and Multiplication fluency.   A test on topic 1 will be given on Friday. 

 

Reading: We will be reading the story Kumak's Fish, and continue focusing on sequence of events. We will also be focusing on adding the endings -ed, -ing, -er, and -est to base words. 

 

Second Grade:

 

Math:  We will continue in our Envision Math books this week. The topic we will be focusing on is “Fluently Add and Subtract Within 20.” The students will learn focus on subtraction strategies this week. A test on topic 1 will be given on Friday. 

 

Reading: We will be reading the story Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. Students will continue to describe character and setting and identify the main idea. We will also be reviewing consonant blends. 

 

 

Second and Third Grade:

 

Writing: We will continue doing some descriptive writing and learning about nouns.

 

Science: We will be learning about the planets.

 

Social Studies/Geography: We will be focusing on the continent of North America and identifying it's landforms and bodies of water.

Reading: This week we will be focusing on character traits and understanding that the setting is both when and where a story takes place and can change through a story.  We will also work in small groups focusing on a variety of skills. Your child will have a new spelling list this week. There will be a spelling test on Friday. 

 

Second Grade:

 

Math:  We will finish our first unit on place value this week. A test will be given on Thursday!

Social Studies/Geography: The students will begin examining the physical elements of our Earth by utilizing map skills to identify the continents, and bodies of water. We will continue using the Montessori map to create our own world maps to better help us understand the location of the seven continents and five oceans.

Math:  We are going to continue to work on chapter 2 that focuses on comparing, ordering and rounding numbers.  Please pay attention to the homework because we will not be using a practice workbook and I will be sending various skills sheets home each night to practice skills introduced in class.  We will also be using Mad Minutes for Addition fluency.   

 

Reading: Small groups will be assigned! Your child will be working on a variety of skills. We will be reading How Charlie McButton Lost Power and focusing on characters, setting, and theme of a story. 

We will also be focusing subject, predicate and simple and compound sentences. 

 

 

Second Grade:

 

Math:  We will continue chapter 4 that focuses on comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers.   We will also be using addition Mad Minutes to help in math fluency. A great way to practice Addition facts is using flashcards.




Reading: 

We will read The Twin Club this week. Our comprehension skills will focus on character and setting. We will also learn about subject and predicate, and simple and compound sentences.

What's New in 206!

September 16-20, 2018

 

 

Third week of School: We are continuting to focus on routines in our classroom as well as our curriculum routines.

 

NWEA TESTING: The students will take the beginning of the year Reading NWEA testing on Tuesday. We will use this data to drive small group instruction for your child! 

 

Remind App:

 I have set up a Remind account to send any quick updates or reminders. I will be sending home a note with the steps on how to join our class, so be on the lookout!

Homework: There will be both math and reading assignments this week along with the weekly reading log. Please make sure your child is writing complete sentences for all assingments. We have been practicing the last two weeks of school. It is so important that your child completes his/her homework daily. In order for our students to maintain these foundationals skills they need to continue to practice, practice, practice!  



THANK YOU: Thank you to all the families who have turned in all school supplies and forms that have been sent home with your child! If you have not turned in all your forms please make sure you do so. Our school does get additional money for the family income form.

We will also be using Mad Minutes for Addition fluency and will be moving into multiplication soon!

 

Reading: I am starting to assess each child’s literacy skills to better differentiate my reading program. I will be conducting  whole group lessons this week. We will be focusing on what skill we are learning, why we are learning it, and how to use it. 

 

 

Second Grade:

 

Math:  We will wrap up our chapter 3 that focuses on place value-ones and tens. Your child will have a test on Friday assessing place value skills (reading, writing and expanding numbers. Please note that the homework sheet might be different to the child’s math homework, depending on the comprehension of the lesson.   We will also be using addition Mad Minutes to help in math fluency. A great way to practice Addition facts is using flashcards.

 

Reading: I am starting to assess each child’s literacy skills to better differentiate my reading program. As I continue to assess each student, I will conduct whole group reading lessons. We will be focusing on what skill we are learning, why we are learning it, and how to use it.
