Thank You! Thank you to Jaya and Araceli for bringing large packages of napkins and to Abigail and Londyn for bringing both napkins and handiwipes!! We really appreciate your generosity.  We still need napkins and handiwipes to get us through the second half of the school year.  Please take a moment and pick up a package of napkins and a couple of handiwipes refill packages.  Your student uses these supplies everyday during lunch.

Newsletter:  It appears that many of you are not receiving the Room 201 News newsletter that I send home every Friday and post on my web page, so I decided, beginning the second semester I will continue to post it on my webpage, but I will email mail it to you. I will be reaching out if I do not have a current email for you.

Urban Gateway Performance: The students will enjoy an Urban Gateways performance – Amazing Africa: music, dancing and storytelling on Monday, Jan. 28th in the Clissold auditorium.  Please return the signed permission slip and $3.00 on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd.

Third Grade:

Math:  The Third Grade students have returned to the HSP Math Text for a unit on Money and Time. Many students had difficulty identifying coins and completely forgot how to count money.  Please work with you student to review this Second Grade skill.   We will continue multiplication Mad Minutes for the remainder of January. It is critical that the students have automaticity with their multiplication facts which requires memorization – please practice at home. I am starting to having the students write their “Times Tables” for homework - it is an effective memorization strategy.

Reading: The students will work in their Guided Reading groups next week and have comprehension/ skills practice for homework.  They will have a new WTW spelling list.

Second Grade:

Math: The Second Grade students wrapped-up Topic 4: Fluently Add Within 100 and will begin multi-digit subtraction with regrouping. However, many students still need to memorize simple single-digit addition facts. Writing them several times is an effective strategy - please practice at home.   We will continue subtraction Mad Minutes for the remainder of January.

Reading: The students will work in their Guided Reading groups next week and have comprehension/ skills practice for homework.  They will have a new WTW spelling list.

Welcome Back: Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break.  Over break I took a quick inventory of our supplies and we are almost out of Baby Wipes to cleanse our hands before lunch and paper napkins.  If your student has not brought their supplies for the 2018-2019 school year or you happen to be out shopping this weekend, we would surely appreciate baby wipes and napkins.

Cold Weather:  Well it looks like we are going to get some winter weather starting this weekend.  Please make sure your student has a sweater to put on if the classroom is chilly.  Also, we will be going out for recess as much as possible, so please make sure your student is dressed for outdoor weather.  If we get some wet weather, I have encouraged the students to bring a change of shoes they can leave in their lockers.  Hard-soled slippers would be great!

NWEA Testing: Almost all students have completed the Middle of the Year NWEA Reading and Math assessment.  I will be sending the scores home as soon as everyone has completed testing.

Third Grade:

Math:  The Third Grade students have wrapped-up Topic 4: Use Multiplication to Divide: Division Facts. We will be returning to the HSP Hard covered Math Text for a unit on Money and Time.  We will continue multiplication Mad Minutes for fact fluency. It is critical that the students have automaticity with their multiplication facts which requires memorization – please practice at home. I may have to start having the students write their “Times Tables” several times for homework - it is an effective memorization strategy.

Reading: The students will have a Reading A to Z leveled story looking at the life of Dr. Martin Luther King next week.  They will also have a new WTW spelling list.

Winter Break:  Phew! A much needed Winter Break is here, however that does not mean it should be a complete break from learning.  It is critical that your child continues to learn, and I don’t mean learning to master the newest video game! Your child needs to continue to learn with you! Spending time curled up together with a book or playing math games together – not on a tablet.  There is a time and place for all the wonderful toys the children may have received, but the time they really want is time with YOU!  Put down your new toys and spend time with your child – electronics free!  Time flies, so appreciate your time together!! Happy Holidays and I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

Thank you Ms. Lee: Thank you so much to Ms. Lee, Willow Briggs’ grandmother, for providing the materials and especially volunteering her time and skills to work with our students to make the “Hand-print Snowman” ornament. They are adorable!!

Grades/Aspen: As you may know, CPS is implementing a new “student information system” called Aspen. The new system was planned to go into effect over break, however CPS has decided to postpone the implementation until April 22nd!  I have not entered any new grades since the Progress Reports were sent home anticipating the possibility of glitches in the implementation of the new system that could jeopardize all the grades entered.  I will begin updating Gradebook with new grades and all should be up to date as soon as possible.

Progress Reports: The Second Quarter 5-Week Progress Reports were sent home Friday, Dec. 14th. Please review the scores with your child then sign and return the bottom portion acknowledging you saw the Report.

NWEA Testing: Almost all students have completed the Middle of the Year NWEA Reading and Math assessment.  I will be sending the scores home as soon as everyone has completed testing.

Also please help your child prepare their oral presentation about their tradition – I don’t just want them reading from their written report; they should have a deep understanding of the tradition. Assignment and rubric attached.

Classroom Cooking:  The students have continued their cooking/baking lesson.  Thank you to Ms. Kosyla and Ms. Burns for helping several students make Pumpkin Bread to share with the class this past week.  We will continue baking through December.

Holiday Tradition Report:  Cultural traditions are an important part of our families with many centering on the holiday season.  The students will be preparing a written and oral report about a tradition that is important to their family.  Please take time and discuss your family’s cultural traditions as they prepare their written report and  help them find an artifact that can be shared with the class (i.e.: picture, toy, ornament). Also please help your child prepare their oral presentation about their tradition – I don’t just want them reading from their written report; they should have a deep understanding of the tradition. Assignment and rubric attached.

Six Flags Read to Succeed: Attached you will find the information about the Six Flags Read to Succeed program. Let’s Keep Reading!  Readers are Leaders!
