Third Grade:

Math:  The Third Grade students have returned to the HSP Math Text for a unit on Money and Time. Many students had difficulty identifying coins and completely forgot how to count money.  Please work with you student to review this Second Grade skill.   We will continue multiplication Mad Minutesfor the remainder of January. 

Reading: The students will work in their Guided Reading groups next week and have comprehension/ skills practice for homework. We will also work on asking and answering questions using Non-Fiction text. They will have a language packet that is due Friday.

Second Grade:

Math: The Second Grade students wrapped-up Topic 4: Fluently Add Within 100 and will begin multi-digit subtraction with regrouping. However, many students still need to memorize simple single-digit addition facts. Writing them several times is an effective strategy - please practice at home.   We will continue subtraction Mad Minutes for the remainder of January.

Reading:  The students will work in their Guided Reading groups next week and have comprehension/ skills practice for homework. We will also work on asking and answering questions using Non-Fiction text. They will have a language packet that is due Friday.

Second Grade

Reading: We will be reviewing Unit 1 skills: character and setting, main idea, text structure, prediction and setting the purpose. We will have a unit test on Friday. We will also be working in small groups based on your child’s reading level. Your child received a new spelling list this week. We will have a spelling test on Friday.   

 Math: We will start a new topic in our math book, “Add Within 100 Using Strategies.” Your child will focus on adding tens and ones on a hundred chart, on an open number line, breaking apart method, compensation, solving one-step and two-step problems and adding numbers using appropriate tools. Please continue to work with your child on his/her fluency skills.  We will have a Mad Minute fluency test every Friday. Your child will have 3 minutes to complete this quiz.  This will go in as a fluency math grade.

3rd Grade

Reading: We will be reviewing unit 1 skills: literary elements, sequence, compare and contrast and author’s purpose. We will have a unit test on Friday. We will also be working in small groups based on your child’s reading level. Your child received a new spelling list this week. We will have a spelling test on Friday.   


 Math:  We will be starting a new unit, “Time and Money.” We will focus on counting bills and coins, comparing money amounts, making change, telling time to the nearest minute, AM and PM, and elapsed time. These skills are hard for children. Please practice counting money and telling time with your child at home. Also continue to work with your child on his/her fluency skills.  We will have a Mad Minute fluency test every Friday. Your child will have 3 minutes to complete this quiz.  This will go in as a fluency math grade.

 

2nd and 3rd

Social Studies: We will continue to learn about states and capitals. State projects are due January 14th.

 

Science: We will start learning about the different parts of plants.

Second Grade & Third Grade

Reading: We will be working on informational texts in small groups. The students will be working on finding and highlighting answers. We have a hard time going back to the text and finding the answer.

 Math: We will review skills this week on all the skills we have learned this far.

Social Studies: We are learning about the United States. We will have a state project due January 10th.

Second Grade

Reading: We will continue working on “A Walk in the Desert.” The skills the students will focus on this week are main idea and text structure. Good readers pay attention to how an author organizes the story. We will be focus on statements and questions too. We will be taking a test on comprehension test on Tuesday.  Your child will be focusing on vocabulary words this week. Please review the definition, synonyms, and antonyms. Your child will have a vocab test on Friday.

 Math: We will start a new topic in our math book, “Work with Equal Groups.” Your child will focus on even and odd numbers and arrays. Please continue to work with your child on his/her fluency skills.  We will have a Mad Minute fluency test every Friday. Your child will have 3 minutes to complete this quiz.  This will go in as a fluency math grade.

3rd Grade

Reading: We will be wrapping up our Expository text, “Supermarket.” We will have an assessment on Tuesday. Your child will get a vocab packet this week. Please review the definitions, antonyms, and synonyms when studying for the test. There will be a test on Friday.  


 Math:  We will continue a our chapters, “Multiplication Facts: Use patterns and Apply Properties: Multiplication: Facts for 3, 4, 6, 7,8. ” The students will learn about multiples, Identity (one) Property, Zero Property, Distributive Property, and Associative (Grouping) Property of Multiplication.  Please continue to work with your child on his/her fluency skills.  We will have a Mad Minute fluency test every Friday. Pumpkin Biography: Please have your child read a Biography and create a pumpkin out of the person he/she read about.

2nd and 3rd grade:


Reading: I will conduct whole group reading lessons using the story, “Jack-O’-Lanterns.”  We will focus on asking and answering questions to understand the text, determining fact and opinion, and synonyms and antonyms. The phonics skill we will focus on is st-blend. The students will also focus on recognizing proper and common nouns. The students will take a comprehension test on Tuesday. I will also be working with small groups based upon your child’s reading needs. The students will also work on a field trip essay in paragraph form using a rubric.

Third Grade:

Math:  We will wrap up comparing, ordering and rounding numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds and thousands. The students will take their chapter assessment on Wednesday. Please pay attention to the homework because we will not be using a practice workbook and I will be sending various skills sheets home each night to practice skills introduced in class.  We will also be using Mad Minutes for Multiplication fluency.   


Second Grade:

Math: The students will continue comparing, ordering and rounding numbers. We will also be using addition Mad Minutes to help in math fluency.  A great way to practice Addition facts is using flashcards.


Second and Third Grade:

Science: We will continue our study of the Solar System. We will continue to research planets.

 

Social Studies/Geography: The students will begin examining the physical elements of our Earth by utilizing map skills to identify the continents, and bodies of water. We will also read the Scholastic News, “Remembering the Storm.”

Reading: I will conduct whole group reading lessons using the story, “Charlie McButton.” We will work on character, setting and theme. The students will work on identifying a sentence and start forming complete sentences. The students will also focus on short vowels this week. We will take a comprehension and vocabulary and spelling test on Friday.

Second Grade:

Math: The Second Grade students will begin our Common Core math curriculum.  This year we will be using various materials to teach math.  We will continue place value up to the thousands place (reading, writing and expanding numbers). Please pay attention to the homework because we will not be using a practice workbook and I will be sending various skills sheets home each night to practice skills introduced in class. Please note that the homework sheet might be different to the child’s math homework, depending on the comprehension of the lesson.   We will also be using addition Mad Minutes to help in math fluency.  A great way to practice Addition facts is using flashcards.

I will conduct whole group reading lessons using the story, “The Twin Club.” The reading skills we will be focusing on are: characters, setting, theme and plot. We will take a comprehension and vocabulary test on Friday. Please reread the story with your child on Thursday. Our spelling rule we will be focusing on short vowels. We will take a spelling test on Friday.

The students will also be working on vocabulary words this week at their grade level. This is a difficult skill for the children. Please make sure your child studies the words, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms all week. We will take a test on Friday.
