Important Dates

Agenda books: We now have every student in our class writing down his/her homework daily. Please make sure you check your child’s agenda books daily to ensure your child is completing his/her homework. These agenda books should be signed daily. 



3rd Reading: We will be wrapping up “I Survived, The Great Chicago Fire.” We will be focusing on a variety of skills as we read this novel. Your child will have a comprehension test on Friday. Your child will work on unit 5 in his/her vocab book. We will be taking a vocab test on Friday. 

 

3rd Math: We will be ending our Topic 6, “Area and Perimeter” in our Envision math books and HSPT book. We will review on Monday and take a test on Tuesday. We will start a unit on graphs-pictographs, bar graph, line graph, line plot, taking data, and ordered graphs.  

 

2nd Reading: The students will be ending the story, “A Good Night for Ghosts.” Your child will have the opportunity to research Louis Armstrong. Your child will take a comprehension test on Friday. Your child will be working on unit 5 in his/her vocabulary books. 

 

2nd grade Math: We will start topic 6 “Subtraction within 100.” Your child will learn to subtract two-digit numbers. Please continue to have your child practice addition and subtraction facts.

 

Science: We will be learning about animals this week. We will learn about their adaptations. 


Social Studies: We will start learning about famous African Americans.

3rd Reading: We will be reading “Supermarket” out of our Reading Street textbooks this week. Your child will focus on the following skills: compare and contrast, background knowledge, writing imperative and exclamatory sentences, context clues, and multiple-meaning words. Your child will work on unit 3 in his/her vocab book. We will have a comprehension test on Wednesday. 

 

3rd Math: We will be wrapping Topic 3, “Use Multiplication to Divide:Division Facts” in our Envision math books Your child will be able to relate multiplication and division, use multiplication to divide 0,1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and multiplication patterns: even and odd. The third grade students will take a math test on chapter 3 on Friday.

 

2nd Reading: The students will be reading a new story, “A Walk in the Desert.” Your child will be focusing on main idea and details, important ideas, and writing declarative and interrogative sentences. We will take a test on Wednesday on this story. Your child will work on unit 3 in his/her vocab book this week. Please look at your child’s homework sheet to see what pages he/she needs to do for that day. 

 

2nd grade Math: We will be starting a new topic, “Fluently Adding Within 100” this week. Your child will be learning about adding using partial sums, models to add 2-digit numbers, adding 2-digit numbers, and solving one and two step word problems. 

 

Science: We will be learning about animals this week. We will learn about their adaptations.

Reading: We will be reading a new story this week in our reading textbook called “Kumak’s Fish.” The skills we will be focusing on are sequence, visualization, and declarative and interrogative sentences. The students will learn how to read and write a thank you note. The students will have a new spelling list this week. We will take a spelling test and comprehension test on Friday. 

 

Second Grade:

 

Math:  We will continue in our Envision Math books this week. The topic we will be focusing on is “Work with Equal Groups.” The students will learn the following strategies: odd and even numbers, arrays, and modeling with math.  We will also be using addition Mad Minutes to help in math fluency. A great way to practice Addition facts is using flashcards.




Reading: We will read anew story this week, “Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night.” The students will learn about character and setting, predicates, and story structure. The students will have a new spelling list this week. We will take a spelling test and comprehension test on Friday.

Science: We will start talking about the layers of the Earth.

 

 

Social Studies/Geography: The students will begin examining the physical elements of our Earth by utilizing map skills to identify the continents, and bodies of water.

Reading: We will start our small groups this week! Your child will be working on a variety of skills. I will be conducting  whole group lesson this week focusing on the story, “What About Me?” The skills we will be working on are: sequence, summarizing, subjects and predicates and compound words. There will be a comprehension test on Friday. 

We will also be focusing on creating an opinion paragraph on a specific topic.

Second week of School: We are continuting to focus on routines in our classroom as well as our curriculum routines.

 

NWEA TESTING: The students will take the beginning of the year Reading NWEA testing on Monday. We will use this data to drive small group instruction for your child!

Homework: There will be math and reading assignments this week. Please make sure your child is writing complete sentences for all assignments. We have been practicing the last two weeks of school. It is so important that your child completes his/her homework daily. These assignments are aligned with the skills that were taught that day. In order for our students to maintain these foundational skills they need to continue to practice, practice, practice! 



THANK YOU: Thank you to all the families who have turned in all school supplies and forms that have been sent home with your child! If you have not turned in all your forms please make sure you do so. Our school does get additional money for the family income form. 

 

 

Third Grade:

We will then go into our second chapter which focuses on comparing, ordering and rounding numbers.  Please pay attention to the homework because we will not be using a practice workbook and I will be sending various skills sheets home each night to practice skills introduced in class. We will also be using Mad Minutes for Addition and Multiplication fluency.   

 

Reading: I am starting to assess each child’s literacy skills to better differentiate my reading program. I will be conducting  whole group lessons this week. We will be focusing on asking and answering questions to demonstrate understanding of a text. We will also be focusing on creating an opinion paragraph on a specific topic.

Reading: I starting to assess each child’s literacy skills to better differentiate my reading program. As I continue to assess each student, I will conduct whole group reading lessons. Math:  The Third Grade students will begin our Common Core math curriculum.  We will be using various materials to teach math.  Our first topic will be focusing on place-value, and comparing, ordering and rounding numbers.  Please pay attention to the homework because we will not be using a practice workbook and I will be sending various skills sheets home each night to practice skills introduced in class.  We will also be using Mad Minutes for Addition and Multiplication fluency.
